You’re right, you don’t HAVE to tell anyone what you’re doing 24/7. These are *suggestions * to help keep a relationship more peaceful and free of drama. Telling a woman, “What are you, an ankle bracelet?” will probably escalate drama and hurt her feelings. So, while you, as an adult, can do whatever you want, it’s good to be aware of the response your actions will get–especially in a relationship.

Also, it’s just not practical for some people to really “live out their purpose” otherwise you wouldn’t have fruit pickers, gravediggers, toilet bowl cleaners, hospital orderlies, investment bankers (most I’ve met are horribly unhappy people but the cushion of their 100K bonuses breaks their nightly fall), etc…

I wish I had access to this info this 4 years ago! I had to learn the hard way. Look at behaviors & words to see if they match up. If they don’t, get away quickly & look for a gal (friend, person) whose words & actions are trustworthy.

100% agree, and love this. (Especially how you touched briefly on how you flipped from lack of respect, to total respect, for the same man :D)

I’d like to add that “inspiring respect by your behaviour” often means making the ‘hard choices’.

There is a reason very few men do this…

It means living different, and choosing different. It means making the ‘hard choices’:

Like “Honey, I love you, but I have for my life, and it honestly does not *feel* like you are co-operating. I have to move on.”

“Dude, you’ve been my best friend for ages, but right now I’m focused on success and getting my life together, and my girl, and it doesn’t *feel* like you’re supporting me, no matter what you’ve said. I’m gonna take a break for a bit.”

“I know it’s scary, and I know it looks like I have no plan, but my heart is telling me to quit my job, and not to wait one more second, so I’m doing it.”

At least, it very often plays out this way, in my experience.

Liz,

I know you didn’t mean it this way, but just a comment, saying “approaching is easy” can come off as slightly insulting – at least initially, especially for people who’ve struggled for years trying to do it.

Especially from someone who’s not “required” to do it- Yes, I get it, there’s no *rule* that says men have to approach. Although I think you’d admit that a guy is immensely helped if he does do it, right? ie it helps him gets what he wants much moreso than say teaching a woman to approach- Otherwise why even have a post geared for guys to help them become more comfortable with approach?
